Take a look through your wardrobe and select a vintage piece or two to donate to the drive! This is a great way to part with a quality item that you may no longer wear, all the while benefiting a great cause.

We will be holding a special event where these donated items will be sold as well as auctioned off. All proceeds will help protect Ontario's wilderness, wildlife and watersheds for future generations to come.

tag:getinvolved.ca,2010-04-09:/act/challenge/610 Learn About Neuroblastoma - a Rare Childhood Cancer 2010-07-27T15:45:49-04:00 2010-05-09T15:13:17-04:00 Antonia P. http://www.getinvolved.ca/member/3274

In September 2009, my son Nathaniel was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma Cancer.  Since then, we have been fighting this monster with all that we are.  To date, Nate has undergone seven cycles of intensive chemotherapy, an 8 hour surgery to remove the tumour (and his kidney), and a cycle of high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplant.  Nate has two major phases of treatment left -- radiation and six months of very painful drug-based antibody therapy.  Since September, we have spent nearly 150 nights in the hospital, and countless clinic visits.  This is not what a three year old boy should be doing.

Neuroblastoma is a rare form of cancer that is responsible for 8-10% of all childhood cancers. Although it is only the 5th most common cancer in childhood, it is responsible for a disproportionate number of deaths due to cancer in children.

Neuroblastoma usually occurs in children under 5. It is the most common tumor in babies under 1 year of age. Although it is very rare, neuroblastoma can occur in older children and adults. Each year, about 25 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma in Ontario, with only 50 children diagnosed each year in all of Canada. Approximately sixty percent of children diagnosed over the age of 1 have widespread (metastatic) disease at diagnosis.

Over the last 20 years there has been modest improvement, due to research, in the prognosis for children diagnosed at less than 1 year of age with neuroblastoma, however, despite research initiatives, there has been little improvement in the prognosis for older children with widespread disease at diagnosis. The vast majority of these children die.

For this challenge, we would be so grateful if you could act in some or all of the following ways:

  1. Learn more about neuroblastoma cancer.
  2. Join the facebook page for the main neuroblastoma charity: "The James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research" - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=139579390533
  3. Learn more from "The James Fund" website - http://www.jamesfund.ca

On June 19th, IDRF will be hosting it’s Annual BBQ & Walkathon in support of IDPs in Somalia.

For the last 19 years, internally displaced families in Somalia have lived under a constant threat of violence due to Political instability. Many men, women and children have been forced to flee their homes in order to save their families. Although they still remain within their country’s border, they have seen social services and basic necessities, such as education, healthcare, sanitation, food & clean water, deteriorate.

We encourage you all to come out and walk for the children of Somalia. Your support will provide Somali children and their parents with primary education to lift them away from the corrosive effects of poverty.

Invite your friends, family, and colleagues for this day off fun. Enjoy a refreshing walk in the park, cultural music, a variety of BBQ foods, Hennah Tattoos, games, poetry & much more!

We challenge you to petition your family & friends for support. Download a pledge form on our website (www.idrf.ca) and raise awareness for a great cause!!

My son and I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in January 2009.  We partnered with Plan Canada to raise money to drill a well and build a school in Mwanza, which is an hour's flight from Kili.  We are finalizing the well, but when we visited the Sabasaba School, we noted there were 2 classrooms for over 300 students.  They are not getting proper education and lack of education breeds frustration and hatred.

We are working with Plan Canada to finalize the school but we need help.  We are challenging others to organize events to raise money for this worthy cause.  Golf tournaments, raffles, home parties, cocktail parties, galas, etc.  There are many things that can be done.  Read more at www.plankilimanjaro.blogspot.com.

Accept the challenge!

When we move and groove with our kids, we enjoy each others company, laugh, dance , sing, listen to music, move our body.  All you need is a cd player and you can borrow cds from the library.  Find a space at home and dance to the music!

There are billions of people in this world who do not have access to clean water to provide to their families. I am so blessed to live in a country where clean water is available for us to use. Water is required to live upon this world, and many are suffering  and are in need of clean water. Since we are sharing this magnificent earth, it is all of our responsibility to help others in need.  I want to organize a fund raiser to help bring awareness to the lack of water provided for the people in Africa, where the event will raise money to help build wells in Africa. The event will be a Yogathon, where individuals who participate in the fund raiser will be practicing Yoga and meditation for hours under the stars during a summer night. This challenge will need the help of many who want to volunteer their time and expertise in organizing and participating in the event.  This idea is still fresh and there are still much details to be determined, however I am open to anyone who would like to help me organize this event.
